The Qi Li are the second-largest Li group on Hainan Island numbering approximately 312,000. Their primary language is Hlai, which itself has three dialects. Most Qi Li are also bilingual with the Hainan dialect of Chinese. The Qi Li and the Chinese landowners have had a history of conflict, so they retreated to mountain areas. Those who did not follow assimilated into Chinese culture and language.
The Qi Li are animists and have an awareness of the spiritual realm, but are unaware of God. In some villages, they believe demons live in nature. They even prohibited Western travelers to come near a local waterfall because it was the home of the devil. Most have never heard the gospel. There may be a few hundred believers among them, but there is no Bible, gospel recording, or evangelistic tools in their language. Without strong guidance or the proper resources, their churches are weak and in great need.
Engagement // What’s Happening Now
There are very few believers among the Qi Li. Most have never heard the gospel. There may be a few hundred believers among them, but there is no Bible, gospel recording, or evangelistic tools in their language. Without strong guidance or the proper resources, their churches are weak and in great need.
Sustainability // The Bigger Story
In the article “China” Randy Hurst, implores for believers to pray for China.
He states: “If we could look at China as God would have us see it, we would be compelled to pray for the Spirit to move among Christians in even greater measure and for the message of Jesus Christ to be offered to the countless masses.”
Prayer is a mighty tool that will help in reaching the Qi Li with the message of salvation.
Partnership // Move Beyond
Please spend a few minutes in prayer for:
- Pray that organizations such as Wycliffe and OneHope will develop Bibles and resources in their language.
- Pray that God will send workers to the Qi Li to establish a strong church and bring guidance to the Christians there.
- Pray that God would reveal himself to the Qi Li in miraculous ways.
- As the Qi Li are presented the gospel, pray for open hearts and minds to the message.
