Nicaragua is Central America’s largest country. An estimated 5,000 of its people are deaf and in need of having the gospel communicated to them in an understandable way.
Engagement — What’s Happening Now
The following story comes from AGWM missionaries Matt and Eva Barlow:
Carlos is a student in our school for the deaf in Managua, Nicaragua. Now 16 years old, Carlos started attending the school when he was 7. When his mother died four years ago, his father turned to drinking. Soon his father abandoned him, and his mother’s sister came to stay in the home. We invited the two of them to our church, which has a deaf ministry. Other churches partnered with us in prayer for them, and soon both accepted Christ. This was just the first in a series of displays of God’s grace in Carlos’ life.
Sustainability — The Bigger Story
The Barlows have established a Latin America ChildCare school that educates students from primary school through high school. In 2003, after watching many deaf adults in Nicaragua struggle to find jobs without a high school education, the Barlows started a high school for the deaf. They have since integrated hearing students into their classrooms and are teaching them to communicate through sign language.
Partnership — Move Beyond
— Pray that deaf leaders would grow in their relationship with the Lord as they are trained to reach the deaf community.
— Pray that the Barlows would have opportunities to share with other pastors in Latin America about the need to reach the deaf. Pray that the Holy Spirit will inspire these church leaders to offer ministry to the deaf.
Entrepreneurs: Consider partnering with Latin American ChildCare by sponsoring a child like Carlos.
Readers, Writers, Speakers: If you know sign language or are willing to learn, consider how God might use the skills you develop to reach the unreached deaf community in Latin America.
Problem Solvers: Many among the deaf community are misunderstood, abused and neglected by their families. How might you become a messenger of Christ’s love to this unreached group?
