Being near the Black Sea and living in the fertile valleys, the Mingrelians traditionally worked in fishing, farming, and agriculture. Some continue to live a semi-nomadic lifestyle but many works as doctors, teachers, businessmen, and other urban jobs. Under the Ottoman Empire, most Mingrelians converted to Islam and the majority practice Islam to this day.
